During World War 1, China reluctantly agreed to a reduced set of 13 Demands from the original 21 Demands that said that Japan took claim of previous German holdings from World War 1. At the end of World War 1, Japan took claim of the Shandong Peninsula, heating relations between the Japanese and the Chinese. When China got the peninsula back, they still had bad reputation with Japan. Over time, this caused Japan to try and take some of China's land, and this may have sparked conflict that would eventually lead up to the world war.
