During the Japanese occupation the Chinese nationalists still considered the CCP (the Chinese Communist Party) a bigger threat. Chiang Kai Shek, the leader of the nationalists party, thought that they should not attack the Japanese until china was united by eliminating the CCP. However, they lost many troops fighting the communists to no avail. In 1936, the worn out generals kidnapped Chiang and forced him to truce with the CCP. The CCP's way of fighting gained them much support in china, while the nationalists lost popularity.
